Do We Still Care About Our Appearance? Embracing Self-Care and Confidence in Our Sixties

As we age, appearance and self-care often become topics of reflection and conversation–and certainly of countless magazine articles and IG posts. During a previous gathering with women in their sixties, we discussed the importance of maintaining self-care routines and feeling good about ourselves. The question arose: do we still care about our appearance as we age? The answer was a resounding YES. But the reasons have evolved—from impressing others to fostering confidence, comfort, and self-assurance. In our sixties and beyond, self-care has become a form of personal empowerment, a way to embrace our changing appearance while focusing on feeling our best.

Why Self-Care Routines Matter in Our Sixties

For many of us, self-care routines—like makeup application, skincare, or choosing clothes that make us feel attractive—have become affirmations of self-confidence. These small acts serve as daily reminders of our readiness and resilience. Perhaps you have a cherished routine, like applying lipstick or putting on a favorite accessory, that signals you’re ready to face the day. It’s no longer about seeking perfection, but rather about embracing who we are with grace and assurance.

Redefining beauty

Redefining Beauty: What Does it Mean to Look Good in Your Sixties?

Our standards of beauty have evolved over time. While beauty in our twenties might have meant the perfect hairstyle or flawless makeup, today it’s a deeper, more personal concept. Now, it’s less about creating an impression and more about inner satisfaction and authenticity. What do you see when you look in the mirror now, compared to years ago? This change in perspective is a powerful reminder that true beauty often lies in self-acceptance and a genuine smile.

Letting Go of “Perfection” and Embracing Authenticity

As we move through our sixties, we may find ourselves ready to release certain grooming habits that feel restrictive. Maybe it’s the need to look polished at all times, or the pressure to appear “impeccable.” Many of us are choosing to let go of these expectations, embracing instead our unique styles and feeling more at home in our own skin. If anything, this is a time for aging gracefully, focusing on comfort, and embracing the person we’ve become.

Self-Care and Beauty Habits: Then vs. Now

Reflecting on the past can help us appreciate how far we’ve come in our self-care journey. The habits we once held dearly may now feel optional, even freeing to release. What used to be an hour-long routine might now be a simpler, more meaningful ritual. Have you noticed how some routines become anchors, while others naturally fade away? Today, self-care might mean a cup of tea, a quiet moment, or something as simple as wearing clothes that make you feel grounded and beautiful.

Aging Gracefully: Embracing Life as a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Aging as a marathon

Aging is often compared to a marathon—it’s not about rushing through but pacing ourselves and embracing each step. Now, we choose rituals that uplift us, letting go of anything that feels burdensome. So, as you continue this journey, consider which habits lift you up and which you’re ready to leave behind. Aging gracefully means balancing appearance with comfort and self-care with self-compassion.

What self-care habits still resonate with you? And which are you ready to let go of?

As we learn to move at our own pace, it’s worth reflecting on the routines that make us feel confident, whole, and true to ourselves.

Share your thoughts in the comments or with a friend; sometimes, voicing these reflections is the most powerful act of self-care.
